Essential Oils 101

Who doesn’t love the smell of an essential oil diffusing in their living room, bedroom or bathroom? As wonderful as the smell of lavender, peppermint or lemon maybe, essential oils can do so much more than make our house smell pretty.

Many cultures have used essential oils to treat depression, anxiety, colds, fevers, skin care, teething babies, arthritis, etc.

One of my favorite essential oils is frankincense.  I don’t know about you, but when I think about frankincense, I immediately think back to midnight mass at Christmas.  I had no idea the healing benefits of this ancient oil until I started researching essential oils for myself.  As an esthetician I like to use it as a tightening and lightening treatment for skin.  It has amazing cellular regenerative properties.  As a side note, because I’m a mom of twin baby boys, it also works “miracles” for teething babies and right now, frankincense is my best friend!

Lemon is also a universal oil.  I like to use this oil as a natural nail polish remover. Nail polish removers can be so harmful to our nails as well as the awful fumes, which I can’t imagine are healthy to be breathing in.  Want to make sure your vegetables are free of mold spores and chemicals? Soak your vegetables and fruits in a sink full of water with a few drops of lemon essential oil before you put your fruits and vegetables away.  They will last longer.  Again I must mention more about my babies.  This oil helps reduce low grade fevers!! Place a few drops on the soles of their feet and spine and voila within a few applications (every 3-4 hours) the fever should have ceased. Please be mindful that I am not suggesting you shouldn’t use Tylenol or Advil to treat your little one’s fever, just offering a natural solution.

Lavender is probably the most well-known oil, but definitely worth mentioning its calming properties.  I personally like to infuse my room as well as the babies’ room with this oil. It promotes relaxation and aids in sleep and let’s be honest, who doesn’t need some good sleep?

Ok, one more I want to tell you about.  It’s called Thieves.  There is an interesting story behind the name of this oil.  Back in ancient times, “thieves” would steal from the tombs of royalty because they knew many of these tombs were full of riches.  Many of these “thieves” would die because of the toxins the decomposing bodies would emit when the tombs were open.  Somehow some of the thieves figured out a combination of oils that they would soak a cloth in and place over their mouth and nose that protected them from the toxins. And that folks is how the name of this essential oil blend got its name.  So what’s so great about this oil other than keeping thieves from dying when raiding tombs of dead people? Well, it’s a 99% hospital grade strength disinfectant.  When it is diffused it kills most airborne pathogens.  You can use it to fend off the flu and colds by applying a few drops to the bottom of your feet before bed.  Our body does most of its healing and rejuvenation while we sleep.

I could go on and on about essential oils and their endless healing properties.  If you are going to implement essential oils into your routine, make sure you are using pure, high quality oils. I prefer Young Living Oils.  They control the quality of their oils from seed to seal.
Enjoy exploring the world of essential oils.  I have yet to find an ailment that there isn’t an essential oil that can’t help.
